I have been lucky enough to have had essential oils around me for my entire life.
I can remember distinctly the smell of Lavender when my dad used to have a bath. He loved lavender. We always used lots of natural and eco products when I was growing up and they were usually fragranced with natural essential oils so they are very familiar to me.
Over the last year or so I have notice the growing amount of attention that all natural products are receiving, especially the beautiful ranges of essential oils on the market. I have a particular close friend whom I would see her little glass bottles of doTERRA oils for a multitude of uses popping up all over my Facebook feed. And as I said, these oils have seemed to be taking over the internet, but I didn’t really know a lot about them and what they can do until the past few months.
doTERRA Essential Oils are the ones that I now use and swear by. Each oil is certified pure therapeutic grade, meaning they’re both pure and potent. After much research i have come to the conclusion that they are far superior to most of the other oils available.
I thought it’d be helpful and fun to break it down with the three most used oils and what you can use them for.
Lemon: If you want to start with oils and don’t know where to begin, this is the one for you. doTERRA sources their lemon from Sicily, Italy and is one of my personal favourites. It’s packed with so many benefits such as naturally cleansing the body and helping with digestion, supporting healthy respiratory function and can be used as a non-toxic cleaning product.
Lemon oil is a cure for Laundry Neglect, a drop or two in the washer or dryer takes out ALL odour when you forget and leave your load of laundry in the washer way too long!
It is an amazing degreaser, disinfectant, goo remover, animal odour remover, shoe odour remover, great to wipe down and disinfect you cutting boards without the nasty chemicals.
Put a few drops in a spray bottle and spray your fresh cut fruits! It will stop them from going brown and be the yummiest flavour enhancer!
Ease Respiratory problems. When used with a humidifier, it’s a great way to slow wheezing, colds, cough, and other upper respiratory problems. Adding a couple drops of lemon essential oil to warm water & honey can change that yucky sore throat feeling, slow a nasty cough, and douse a fever. Lemon oil fights bacteria, as well as viruses.
Hair Highlights …Chemical Free. Skip the expensive salon highlight treatment, and use lemon oil to create your own hair highlights. Just go in the sun after using with your hair product, and it will lighten your hair.
Fight Fungus. Tired of seeing that unsightly nail fungus? Lemon oil is great for nails, and can help fight against nail fungus.
Clear Thinking & Clear Focus, Made Visible. A clear mind, a clean slate, a fresh outlook. It’s all good. Real good. Diffuse lemon oil and you got it.
Take the Heat Out of Cold Sores. When you have a gnarly cold sore that’s just begging for attention, douse it with a few drops of lemon oil and you’ll have a new best friend.
Nice Mood … No Really. Chase away the moody blues (not the band), with a bit of blah-reducing lemon oil. Whether you choose to diffuse it or apply topically, it’s hard to not improve your outlook with lemon oil around!
Another favourite, this essential oil powerhouse is cold-pressed from lemon rinds to preserve its delicate nature and potent properties. Lemon is known as a powerful aromatic, topical, and internal cleanser that can be used to complement many other oils. Diffusing lemon in a room can cleanse the air and uplift mood. It can also be used on surfaces throughout the home as a non-toxic cleaning booster. For aromatic, topical, or dietary use.
Peppermint: I love the way this oil always re-energizes me. If you already have the lemon oil, you can add a drop of this to the lemon water for a natural mouth wash. Benefits of peppermint include healthy respiratory function and clear breathing (helps with my allergies so much and also clear my stuffy nose), promoting good digestive health and can even be used to repel bugs naturally.
This little bottle is great to carry around if you get headaches. Rub a drop or two on your temples for relief!
Calm an upset tummy. Just one drop of peppermint oil rubbed on the stomach (diluted with coconut oil) or inhaled will help with indigestion, an upset stomach or other tummy upset. A must have when traveling!
Cool Your Tootsies. If you’ve been on your feel all day or religiously wear hard soled shoes, just add peppermint oil to a cold water compress to cool your overworked, over heated tootsies.
Perk Up. The invigorating aroma of peppermint is a wonderful, non-stimulating way to perk up on long drives, in school, during late night homework or any other time you need to “burn the midnight oil.”
Energise Your Lather. Some shampoo and conditioner combos can make you want to go back to sleep. No energy. No pep. No fun. Not good. Add peppermint to your potions to stimulate the scalp, energise and wake up! The oil is an antiseptic in nature, and can also help remove dandruff and itchy scalps.
As I said before, SERIOUSLY GOOD FOR HEADACHES! A few drops of peppermint dabbed on your temples, neck and sinuses can quickly spring into action and chase that headache away! Be sure to use a carrier oil if you are sensitive. I like coconut oil.
Add to all things Chocolate. Enhance your chocolate in a gazillion ways: gourmet hot chocolate, mint brownie frosting, peppermint bark, peppermint patties, peppermint brownies, peppermint chocolate Bundt cake, red velvet cupcakes with white chocolate peppermint cream cheese, yum!
Unforgettable Beverages. Peppermint mocha, peppermint tea, peppermint hot chocolate, that’s right… it’s all delish.
Many household bugs do not like peppermint oil – ants, aphids, beetles, plant lice, mice and cockroaches try to steer clear of peppermint. Just add to water in a spray bottle and spray where you think pests grace you with their presence!
Clean Naturally. Peppermint oil is a wonderful natural cleaning agent because it has antibacterial properties. Add to a water bottle and spray on counter tops and bathroom surfaces, scrub, and enjoy cleaner clean.
Lavender: doTERRA sources their lavender from the Provence region of France. After a stressful day just reach for the lavender for it’s calming qualities. Grab a glass of wine, light the candles and add a few drops of lavender oil to the bath for relaxation. You can also put some of the oil on your pillows, bedding, or the bottom of your feet before bed. It really helps keep your space calm and relaxed.
Lavender (lavandula angustifolia) is the most versatile of all essential oils. Most commonly known for its relaxing effects on the body, therapeutic-grade lavender has been highly regarded for the skin. It may be used to cleanse cuts, bruises and skin irritations. Carrying a bottle of lavender around with you is like having your own personal first aid kit, perfume and pick-me-up.
Rub 2-3 drops of lavender oil in your cupped palms, then use the inhalation method to draw the scent all the way into your amygdala gland (the emotional warehouse) in your brain to calm the mind. Then, rub on the feet, temples, wrists (or anywhere) for an immediate calming effect on the body. Great for use in crowded areas like planes or subways to carve out your own personal oasis.
Again, use the cupping and inhalation method. Then, rub a drop of Lavender oil on your palms and smooth on your pillow to help you sleep. Perfect for babies (to massage into their feet before bed) if diluted 1 drop to every 10ml of carrier oil.
Put a drop of Lavender oil on a bee sting or insect bite to stop itching reduce swelling.
Drop Lavender oil on cut to stop bleeding, clean wound, and kill bacteria.
Mix several drops of Lavender oil with a nut or vegetable mixing oil (coconut, sesame, etc) and use topically on eczema and dermatitis. I have a dear friend who suffers from severe eczema and swears by this.
As you can see, Lavender is an essential oil that can uplift your life (and mood), heal and entice in a variety of ways. It’s a great secret weapon to have on hand at all times!
